The Earth was suffering unprecedented changes

A UN report has warned that "the Earth's systems are being pushed to their limits biophysical" and sudden changes ahead, irreversible and potentially catastrophic. The Programme of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) said that climate change, depletion of the ozone layer, the collapse in the fish population and the mass extinction of animals are among the most worrying environmental threats. The 525 pages report released on Wednesday reported that in recent years there has been little or nothing to meet international targets aimed at reducing environmental destruction. The text urged the leaders to implement policies to act urgently. The German Achim Steiner, born in Brazil and director of UNEP, said the UN mega conference on sustainable development held in Rio de Janeiro this month would be the ideal forum to take the necessary measures to prevent environmental catastrophe.Time is running out, Steiner warned, as the world is on track to have 9,000 million people by 2050 and as the global economy consumes more and more natural resources."On current trends, if current patterns prevail production and consumption of natural resources and can not be reversed or 'decoupled', then governments preside over unprecedented levels of damage and degradation," he said in a statement. Of the 90 most important environmental goals that exist, only four are making significant progress, the report said.Among the successful goals are to reduce the deterioration of the ozone layer and to provide access to clean water. In contrast, in 24 goals was little or no progress, for example in combating climate change and desertification. Besides deforestation is reaching high levels.
